School Boy Discovers New Jelly

A schoolboy who stumbled across a new species of box jellyfish in a Gold Coast canal has been rewarded for his curiosity, with scientists naming the tiny-tentacled creature in his honour.

Saxon Thomas was just nine years old when he discovered the unusual looking jellyfish while fishing with two friends in March 2013.

He carefully put the tiny creature in a jar and later showed his prized catch to his father, who realised it was something special and sent it to the Queensland Museum.

"We had a look at it and realised it was a new species," the museum's marine expert Merrick Ekins told AAP.

"We decided to name the jellyfish after the kid to reward his curiosity."
